Haṭhayoga — the Way of the Force

Saturday, 17 January 2026 | 11:00 am to 5:00 pm | Angel Hall, Totnes

Haṭhayoga is a sheltering monastery for all of those scorched by the three kinds of suffering. — Haṭhapradīpikā 1.10

Are you interested in deepening your yoga practice and exploring the origins of physical yoga? Haṭhayoga is the root tradition from which most modern styles of yoga developed. It is a path of physical transformation and spiritual emancipation in which the body is utilised as a vehicle for liberatory contemplation. Regular practice can improve respiratory function and help develop strength, balance, and flexibility. Haṭhayoga can also enhance mental clarity, reduce stress, and cultivate a deeper connection with oneself.

We will begin the day with traditional Sanskrit mantras, followed by gentle sopāna (preliminary) exercises and revitalising breath-based kriyās (purification techniques). We will then flow into a contemplative postural practice featuring classic haṭhayoga āsanas. The morning session will conclude with focused prāṇāyāma* (breathwork) and restorative yoganidrā (guided relaxation).

After lunch, James will present an overview of the haṭhayoga tradition—its diverse history, cultural context, and practical approach. There will be an opportunity for questions and group discussion. The day will close with further prāṇāyāma and yoganidrā, leaving you feeling centred and rejuvenated.

With over twenty-five years of experience in haṭhayoga, James brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his teaching. He has been teaching haṭhayoga since 2007 and has worked as a tutor for the Devon School of Yoga since 2010. He also holds a Master’s degree in Traditions of Yoga and Meditation from SOAS, University of London, and is currently pursuing a PhD, examining the remedial and purificatory practices of haṭhayoga. His research recently took him to the Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute in India, and he will be sharing some of the traditional haṭhayoga practices he learnt there during this workshop.

Bring a packed lunch and a water bottle (good drinking water is available at The Angel Hall). We’ll provide tea, coffee, and snacks throughout the day.

Price: £45–£60 - sliding scale depending on your budget.
